4 rescued after small boat runs aground in Newport Beach

Four people were rescued after a small boat ran aground off the coast of Newport Beach, prompting a coordinated response from lifeguards and fire personnel.

According to officials, the vessel experienced mechanical problems Saturday evening and drifted ashore near Ladder Rock. With rough surf conditions pushing the boat toward the coastline, emergency crews were called in to assist the passengers and prevent the situation from becoming more dangerous.  

Newport Beach lifeguards responded quickly, swimming a line through the surf and securing it to the stranded vessel. Working alongside the lifeguard rescue boat Sea Watch, crews were able to pull the boat back into deeper water and safely remove the passengers from danger. Fire officials later praised the actions of the rescue teams, noting that their quick response helped avert what could have become a much more serious incident.  

All four people on board suffered only minor injuries, and none required transportation to a hospital. Officials said the incident serves as a reminder of how quickly conditions can change on the water, especially when mechanical failures occur near rocky sections of coastline.  

The rescue took place Saturday evening near Ladder Rock in Newport Beach, where lifeguards and fire personnel successfully brought all four passengers to safety.
