6-Foot Waves Possible In Newport Beach Starting Friday

Beachgoers in Newport Beach are being urged to use caution as forecasters warn that elevated surf and King Tides could bring waves up to six feet along portions of the Southern California coastline.

The National Weather Service issued a Beach Hazard Advisory through Friday morning, warning that a combination of high astronomical tides and above-normal surf may create hazardous conditions near the shoreline. Officials say low-lying beach areas could experience minor flooding during the highest tides, particularly in areas vulnerable to tidal overflow.  

In addition to the possibility of localized flooding, strong rip currents and larger-than-normal waves are expected to increase the risk for swimmers and anyone entering the water. Weather officials specifically cautioned inexperienced swimmers to stay out of the ocean until conditions improve.  

The advisory comes as King Tides return to the coast, a natural phenomenon that produces some of the highest tides of the year. When combined with elevated surf, these tides can create dangerous beach conditions and temporarily impact walkways, parking areas, and other coastal infrastructure.  

Local officials are encouraging residents and visitors to remain aware of changing ocean conditions, heed warnings from lifeguards, and use extra caution near jetties, rocks, and shorebreak areas. Popular surf locations such as The Wedge are known for producing especially powerful waves during large swell events.  

The Beach Hazard Advisory remains in effect through Friday morning for coastal areas throughout Orange County, including Newport Beach.
