Massive summer swell brings 20-foot waves to Newport Beach's famous Wedge, prompting warnings

Massive waves are expected to pound Newport Beach this week as forecasters predict what could be some of the biggest surf conditions Southern California has seen so far this year.

According to the National Weather Service, a powerful south swell is forecast to build through the middle of the week, generating waves of 8 to 12 feet along parts of the coast and potentially much larger sets at The Wedge. Officials say the swell is expected to strengthen Tuesday before peaking Wednesday and Thursday, creating hazardous conditions for inexperienced swimmers and beachgoers.  

The Wedge, located at the end of the Balboa Peninsula, is famous for producing massive waves when incoming swell reflects off the harbor jetty and combines with additional wave energy. During the latest swell event, some waves reportedly exceeded 20 feet, drawing large crowds of surfers, bodyboarders, photographers, and spectators eager to witness the rare conditions.  

While the towering surf creates exciting conditions for experienced riders, officials are warning that the same waves can be extremely dangerous. Strong rip currents, powerful shorebreaks, and unpredictable wave patterns can quickly overwhelm swimmers and less experienced surfers. Lifeguards routinely increase staffing and monitoring efforts during major swell events due to the increased risk of injuries and water rescues.  

The expected swell is already generating significant interest throughout the surf community, with many calling it one of the most impressive south swells of the season. Crowds are expected to gather along the shoreline throughout the week to watch the action unfold as the waves arrive.
