Newport Beach firefighters applaud return to full four-firfighter staffing on the Peninsula

Firefighters serving the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach are once again operating with four-person engine companies after city officials restored staffing levels, a move firefighters say will improve emergency response and enhance safety for both crews and the public.

The staffing increase follows years of advocacy from firefighters and community leaders who argued that restoring a fourth firefighter to Peninsula engine companies would better align the department with national firefighting standards. Fire officials say four-person crews can perform critical tasks more efficiently during structure fires, medical emergencies, vehicle collisions, and other high-risk incidents.  

According to the Newport Beach Firefighters Association, the additional staffing allows firefighters to split responsibilities more effectively upon arrival, reducing the time it takes to begin rescues, search buildings, deploy hose lines, and provide emergency medical care. Officials say those first few minutes can make a significant difference during life-threatening emergencies.

Firefighters also noted that the restored staffing benefits more than just fire suppression. Four-person crews improve response capabilities for the wide range of calls the department handles each year, including medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, water rescues, and traffic collisions.

Department leaders called the decision an investment in both firefighter safety and public safety, emphasizing that adequate staffing helps crews respond more effectively while reducing physical demands during complex emergencies. The change reflects the city’s continued commitment to maintaining a high level of emergency service for residents and visitors alike.
