OC City Posts, Then Deletes Amusing Fake ID Arrest Video

A body camera video shared by the Newport Beach Police Department showing the arrest of an underage woman using a fake ID quickly went viral before unexpectedly being removed from the city’s social media accounts.

The footage, originally posted as part of the department’s “Not in Newport” campaign, captured an officer questioning two college-aged women outside Mutt Lynch’s on Balboa Peninsula after they were suspected of using fake identification to enter a bar. During the exchange, one woman gave conflicting answers about where she lived and attended school, leading to a conversation that quickly spread online because of her confusing responses.  

According to police, one of the women admitted she was 20 years old and had been using a fake ID. Officers arrested her on suspicion of possessing fraudulent identification. Under California law, using or possessing a fake ID can result in fines, community service, possible jail time, and even a driver’s license suspension.  

The video was intended to reinforce the department’s efforts to discourage underage drinking during the busy spring break and summer seasons. However, just hours after it was posted, the video was removed from the department’s social media pages without explanation. Officials have not publicly stated why it was taken down, leading to widespread speculation online and renewed interest in the footage.  

The incident generated significant attention across social media, with many viewers sharing clips of the encounter and debating whether body camera footage like this should remain publicly available. Despite the video’s removal, the department says it remains committed to cracking down on underage drinking and fake IDs through its ongoing enforcement campaign.
