Over 400 people arrested during chaos at Newport Beach July 4th celebrations, police say

What began as a Fourth of July celebration turned into widespread chaos in Newport Beach, where fights, illegal fireworks, vandalism, and large crowds overwhelmed police, leading to hundreds of arrests and several injured officers.

According to police, the unrest began around 7 p.m. on the Balboa Peninsula after large groups gathered and began lighting illegal fireworks and fighting in the streets. As the evening progressed, the situation escalated, with crowds blocking roadways, damaging property, and creating dangerous conditions for both residents and visitors.  

Authorities said officers attempting to restore order were met with resistance as individuals allegedly threw fireworks directly at law enforcement. One officer was reportedly struck by a mortar-style firework, while several others suffered injuries during the response. Police also reported that a nearby Pavilions grocery store was looted and vandalized as crowds spilled into surrounding businesses and parking lots.  

In response, more than 350 officers from 17 regional law enforcement agencies assisted in clearing the area after an unlawful assembly was declared. Mounted officers, specialized units, and mutual aid resources worked late into the night to disperse the crowd, reopen streets, and restore emergency access throughout the peninsula.  

Police ultimately arrested 402 people during the holiday weekend, a dramatic increase from the 60 arrests made during the same period last year. Officials said approximately 200 of those arrested refused repeated lawful orders to disperse after the unlawful assembly declaration was issued.  

City leaders had implemented expanded safety measures ahead of the holiday, including increased police staffing, enhanced enforcement zones, and stricter penalties for illegal fireworks and other violations. Despite those efforts, the city says it will conduct a full review of the weekend’s events to determine what additional measures may be needed for future celebrations.
