Trash Truck Fire Breaks Out In Newport Beach

A trash truck caught fire while traveling through a neighborhood in Newport Beach Tuesday morning, prompting a response from firefighters and a temporary disruption to traffic in the area.

According to the Newport Beach Fire Department, the incident was reported near the intersection of Catalina Drive and Holmwood Drive. When crews arrived, they found smoke coming from the rear cargo area of the truck, indicating that debris inside the vehicle had caught fire.  

To prevent the flames from spreading and causing more significant damage to the vehicle, firefighters had the truck dump its contents onto the street. Crews then worked to extinguish the burning debris and contain the situation before it could escalate further. Authorities said the fire remained confined to the truck’s cargo area and was successfully brought under control.  

No injuries were reported, and firefighters remained on scene to ensure there were no lingering hot spots. Residents and motorists were advised to use caution while traveling through the area as crews completed cleanup operations and removed the debris from the roadway.  

Trash truck fires are often caused by improperly discarded items such as lithium-ion batteries, hot ashes, or other combustible materials that can ignite while compacted inside collection vehicles. Fire officials frequently remind residents to follow proper disposal guidelines for hazardous materials to help prevent similar incidents.  

The incident occurred Tuesday morning near Catalina Drive and Holmwood Drive in Newport Beach, and firefighters were able to contain the fire without any reported injuries.
